Dominated by the Opera House, there is very little we would recognise here in 2021. The Old Grammar School is just visible beyond the Opera House in this postcard view posted in 1916, but where once the Burges crossed the end of the street, merging into Bishop Street, we now have entrance to Corporation Street, opened in 1931.
Opening before Corporation Street had its tape cut, however, was the new Wine Lodge on the corner with the Burges, which many of us will remember as the Tally Ho, Tudor Rose or, since 2017, the Philip Larkin. This replaced a much older pub of the same name, which we see in the old photo above as the tall, thin four-storey building in the centre.
